** Calendar Notes **

From across the country (and right here in Illinois), prayers and
words of encouragement keep pouring in for the Children's Chaplaincy,
which God has placed on my heart. I thank Him daily for each of "my"
beautiful kids in the greater Charleston, SC area, and the
opportunities that He gives me to personally mentor/tutor them, their
teachers, friends and families. From J, a ten-year-old just beginning
to read Braille, to T, a fifteen-year-old facing additional health
challenges including cystic fibrosis, each is brilliant in his/her own
way and unique in his/her own interests and abilities. I am
also grateful for the congregations of First Christian Church,
Vandalia, IL; Lakewood, IL United Methodist Church; and Grace United
Methodist Church in Charleston, SC, for their participation! A
special thanks to Marti and Bill Hyatt for their many hours of
volunteer service.

Over the next month, "Music By Laurel Jean" will be sharing
Ministry throughout Central and Southern IL. I look forward to seeing
old friends and new faces alike, and telling you more about "my" kids!

This weekend, April 25 and 26, I'll be presenting Saturday
Evening Concert Ministry and bringing a Sunday Morning "Message In
Music" for God's kids of all ages, at the Troy, IL Friedens United

Prayer/Praise Notes

The family that prays together stays together! From my Children's
Chaplaincy, please remember H, R and J, who are adjusting to blindness
in a sighted world; S, T and B as they learn to be even more
independent; and JT, who is still fighting kidney disease. Pray also,
for the discernment of their teachers, doctors, families and friends.

From the "MusicNotes" Family, remember Judy, Jeri's
daughter-in-law, who is recovering from major surgery to fight breast
cancer. Also remember Rev. T. in Southern Indiana, recently home from
the hospital, who still struggles with neck/back pain. We rejoice
with the family of Luke the Guide Dog, on Luke's speedy recovery, and
with Nancy, whose fianc is home and cancer-free!

** The Love of Easter **
================================================== ====================

     This week, many visitors blessed me. Among them were two women,
very dear to my heart. One happens to be Christian. The other is
Jewish. One served throughout my childhood as my itinerant vision
teacher. The other serves in the same capacity for T, a blind youth
in my Children's Chaplaincy. As itinerant teachers, these two
dedicated women play a vital role in the mainstreamed education of
blind students, teaching skills necessary for us to attend the same
classes and do the same work as our sighted peers.
     One was visiting South Carolina from Illinois with her daughter,
who plans to relocate here. The other came to my office to learn more
about JAWS, the talking software which reads the computer screen and
also allows me to use the computer keyboard in place of a mouse.
     Both visited me on the same day and were here at the same time.
Both graciously accepted an invitation to join several other friends
and me for a meal. One sat on either side of me as we gathered for
lunch. Each took the hand I extended to her and joined hands with
others around the table as I offered thanks to God for our meal and
our time together.
    During this unique and wonderful visit, I was reminded of the Love
of Easter. The Love of Easter is all-inclusive, non-exclusive. It is
a spontaneous Love like no other, which says, "Stop right where you
are and come as you are to the Table." This Love transcends
generations and goes the extra mile, uniting people on all walks of
life, with open arms to embrace the task at hand.
     This Easter Season, many of you in my "MusicNotes" family will
join me in rejoicing, for God loved the world (that's you and me)
enough to send His only Son Jesus to take on sin and accept the
punishment for sin in our place. This truly is the Love of Easter,
and it continues to thrive in the working of the Holy spirit. Let us
also join together in this time of renewal, inviting God to create in
our lives a greater reflection of such Love.

** 1 Corinthians 13:13 **
And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the
greatest of these is love.

Part of the Family

In my last entry, I told you about J, who dreaded learning Braille. On February 19, I was blessed with another opportunity to visit Js school as I accepted an invitation to present during the Student Bodys celebration of Black History Month. As we prepared for the celebration, a school social worker mentioned that since my previous visit, (January 27), J and his classmates continue to be very excited about his learning Braille!

I still work regularly with T, who is effectively reading, word processing, doing math calculations and playing music on the Pacmate, a specialized piece of technology for the blind. I so admire T and the great-grandparents raising him, in their determination for him to have a full life and learn as much as possible.

Recently, I began working with S, one of the Braille Challenge winners. S really wants to learn to cook, so we made Sunday dinner after church one day. I received the church bulletin ahead of time, so that I could transcribe it into hardcopy Braille for her, and could also import it into my electronic Braille note taker for myself. Each of us was able to participate in worship services at Grace United Methodist Church. We received Communion, and we talked a lot about the meaning of this beautiful Sacrament. These were truly blessed, God-centered times!

My thanks to the congregation of Grace Church, for the awesome support! It was a blessing for me to present Concert Ministry for these folks on February 8, and again offer Ministry for the Church Weekday School on February 13. Miss Audrey with Guide Dog Zack, Marti and Jackie the Service/Therapy Dog, all joined me on this special day just for kids, ages one through five years!

In Cottageville, SC, the Maple Cane Gospel Music Ministry featured Music By Laurel Jean as part of a February 27^th Singing, starring the Primitive Quartet. This was a wonderful evening spent in Gods Family Room, with Bluegrass Gospel Music, Ministry and Fellowship.

Every day, God continues to introduce me to more of my family in Him, all ages, on all walks of life. Our Lord is good, all the time!

On February 13, Audrey, Zack, Marti, Jackie the Service Dog and I
presented Music and Ministry for children ages one through five years
attending the Weekday School of Grace United Methodist Church. One of
the teachers asked her students if they remembered how I would be
reading a story to them. A five-year-old eagerly answered, "Laurel
Jean is going to read to us in Spanish today because she can't see
print."

We remember in prayer college students like those attending Dr.
Putman's class at Charleston Southern University, who have chosen to
make a career of Special Needs Education. We lift up students
everywhere, like those attending Frierson Elementary School on
Wadmalaw Island, where I was blessed to present for this year's
celebration of Black History Month.

From our Children's Chaplaincy for blind youth, remember J, who
is becoming more excited about learning Braille; T, who is learning
more about the technology that will help him as he enters high school;
S, who is learning to cook and striving to master math and science; B,
an honor student with a heavy course load; H, who is excited about
receiving a new large print Bible; and JT, who continues to battle
kidney disease. We thank god every day for folks like the
congregation of Lakewood United Methodist Church, Lakewood, IL, who
help provide sponsorship for this calling which God has placed on my
heart.

We lift you and all of the MusicNotes Family up in prayer, daily.
We rejoice with the Christian Braille producers whom we are blessed to
help sponsor, as they spread God's Good News in spite of these
troubled times. We pray for M and A, whose mother and cousin
respectively are battling cancer, and we are still praying for Pastor

Children's Chaplaincy Highlights

It is difficult to believe that over a month has passed since my last
entry! We're in the middle of a busy work week, here in SC, and I'd
like to share some highlights to bring you up to date.

On January 4, I hosted a Drop-In here at my Southeastern Headquarters.
Twenty people, including three of the kids, were present. Santa left
a little something under the tree for each of the kids. All of the
gifts were labeled in Braille only, so just the blind kids could pick
out their gifts. Sighted adults who had gifts under the tree required
the help of the blind children in picking out their gifts and decoding
the messages Brailed on them.

The Drop-In also afforded an opportunity for an area Lions Club to get
acquainted with these three children. The organization is interested
in networking with the kids and helping to provide something unique
and accessible (a game, a cookbook, etc.) for each of them. In
addition to those representing the Lions, one itinerant teacher of the
visually impaired was also present.

Later in January, we learned that the South Carolina Summer Camp Leo
has been reinstated! This was made possible in part by a visit with
the Lions who attended the Drop-In. R, one of my young guests, took the time to express appreciation for Camp Leo and all efforts of area Lions which make this experience possible for blind youth.

Over Christmas Break, I spent time with two of the children,
extensively. T is learning to use a new piece of technology for the
blind. After three of our tutoring sessions, T was doing simple word
processing, and is excited about taking notes in class with sighted
peers.

B, an honor student, taught me how to play chess (and beat me
miserably), as we discussed independent living skills and life goals.

I spent time with both of these youths throughout the month of
January. I also met J, who is learning Braille. I introduced J and
sighted classmates to the cool fact that when blind people read
Braille, we can read in the dark. I also raced one of J's classmates,
writing a sentence in Braille while the student wrote using a pencil.
I won!

Yesterday, I had a wonderful opportunity to serve as a judge for the
first ever South Carolina Regional Braille Challenge, a nationwide
academic competition for blind students, Grades 1 thru 12. I served
on a judging panel with two teachers and one Braillist. What a joy to
read the work of the brilliant young people who participated in this
event!

We're preparing for a Low Vision Fair tomorrow, and Concert Ministry

Greetings from our Southeastern Regional Office in beautiful
Charleston, SC, where my Holiday Newsletter has once again turned into
"New Year's Notes, 2009"! Thanks for taking a minute to look back
with me over a very blessed 2008, my 20th year in Music and Ministry!

** Now, on with the "Notes"! **

The January 2008 schedule was highlighted just down the road from
Ramsey, in Hillsboro, IL. A Saturday evening Service, hosted by the
Hillsboro United Methodist Church, brought a lot of folks from the
area who have known me from the time I first began to present music on
the professional level...when I was just a kid! Even a few avid
square dancers (from my days as an accompanist with the Illinois State
Old Time Fiddlers Association) opted to break with their Saturday
night tradition and came to church instead, tapping their toes to the
Gospel!

On Sunday, February 3, Audrey, Zack, Joan and I hosted "Soul Food
Sunday" at the First Christian Church of Vandalia, following a unique
"Laity Sunday Service". We personally prepared a meal of potato
salad, lettuce salad, Southern-style red rice 'n' sausage with
homemade "macaroni pie", Sloppy Joes and tropical cake! It was a
blessing to prepare this meal for all of our brothers and sisters in
Christ who came to share it with us! Read recipes and share your own

A variety of engagements followed throughout Central Illinois and
Missouri, while Audrey and Zack spent a few weeks in South Carolina
ministering to their home community of Charleston. On March 4, I
presented "Seeing and Being God's Light", featuring Ministry, Music
and Braille Awareness for a convocation of St. Paul Lutheran Schools
(Grades K through 8), as part of Lutheran Schools Week in Concordia,
MO. God's children of all ages had an opportunity to see the Braille
alphabet and their names in Braille, to experience access technology
and materials for the blind, and to ask questions about how we who are
blind accomplish things often taken for granted by sighted
individuals. I was especially moved when one sixth-grader wrote about
this event, "I think Laurel Jean came to see us to teach us that God
makes each of us different, but He gives each of us a purpose on earth

Audrey and Zack returned to Illinois to join us for Easter Worship at
Union Chapel Baptist Church in Girard. Zack's book and Audrey's
testimony were also featured in March, as part of the "Lamp Lighter"
Series, produced and hosted by Christian Radio FM 88.3 WJLY, Ramsey.

On March 28, we hosted "Family Game Night" at Ramsey Headquarters,
where folks gathered to enjoy snacks and table games, prayer and
fellowship! During that week, we were also visited by the current
president of Dixie Land Guide Dog Users, Nancy Smith and her guide,
Luna. They came all the way from South Carolina to participate in
Game Night, and to join us in Ministry!

While Nancy and Luna were with us, we traveled to several
presentations throughout Central IL. A memorable program was hosted by
Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church of Belleville, IL, in partnership
with Seeds of Hope Ministries. This beautiful church truly welcomes
God's people of all abilities (and disabilities). I will never forget
the pastor as she approached the altar for opening and closing prayers
that day. The long ramp leading up to the altar accommodated her
wheelchair almost as beautifully as she accommodated her parishioners
and those of us who were visiting.

My Music and Ministry continue to be underscored by my Mission:
helping to break down barriers between blind and sighted individuals;
encouraging an enthusiasm for sharing the Gospel among all people;
seeing and being God's Light in the world. After wrapping up another
season of Mother-Daughter banquets and women's spring events in May,
Joan manned the Ramsey office while Audrey, Zack and I flew to
Charleston, SC. The itinerary included Worship services, a special
blessing of a service animal, and even a three -day tent camping
adventure on Edisto Beach...but that wasn't all.

One of the most rewarding experiences for me has been our decision to
sponsor Christian books, especially those from the Chronicles of
Narnia Series, produced in Braille by the Assemblies of God National
Center for the Blind, to be sent to blind children. These books even
contain illustrations, which can be discerned by touch. I thank God
for the opportunity to share my faith and to promote Braille literacy
in this way. During the three weeks spent in Charleston, I was able
to meet personally with many of the children who have received these
books, sponsored by my ministry. I returned to Illinois, feeling
God's tremendous calling on my heart to minister to these kids. View

In June, Audrey and I each began a two-year, college/seminary level
religious study course made possible by the Christian Blind Institute.
We need and appreciate your prayers for this educational opportunity.

In July, Audrey, Zack and I returned to South Carolina, where "Music
by Laurel jean" proudly announced the establishment of a second,
Southeastern Regional office in Charleston. This extension will afford
more time and space for outreach activities. God has presented us
with a unique opportunity for a Children's Chaplaincy as part of this
outreach. We treasure your prayers as we take these steps to reach
blind youth, their parents, teachers and friends. We returned to
Illinois just in time to present a program for the 2008 Christian
Blind Institute Conference in St. Louis, MO.

With August and September came more church services and homecomings
throughout Central and Southern IL. In Mid-September, we presented to
the Women of Grace Episcopal Church, Kirkwood, MO. We were called
back to South Carolina for Music, Ministry and my Children's
Chaplaincy the first week of October.

During this brief visit to Charleston, Audrey, Zack and I were asked
to speak to students at Charleston Southern University, where we met
Dr. Cynthia Putnam, Dean of Special Education. Dr. Putnam has asked
us to return to address her students on subjects relating to the
specialized education of blind children.

My birthday (October 12) found me in Granite City, IL, where I
presented for St. John's United Church of Christ. Thanks, Pastor
Frost, for the special card and the impromptu "Happy Birthday" song!
We paid another visit to WJLY Radio during the following week, to help
with Share, 2008. It was great working with everyone from Moody
Radio, and the local community. After a Sunday evening service in
Glasford, IL, we arrived bright and early at Lincoln's Christian
Easy-Listening Radio AM 1370 WLLM for a guest appearance on the Live
Record Request Program hosted by station manager Bill Dolan. Listen

On November 2, Audrey, Zack, Joan and I brought the Message for
Evening Worship at the Lakewood, IL United Methodist Church. We
shared a lot about our newly founded Children's Chaplaincy with this
congregation, which presented me with my first Braille Bible when I
was only seven! Our thanks to the Lakewood Church for their ongoing
support!

The next weekend, we were in Louisville, KY, presenting for the Deaf
and Disabilities Ministry of Southeast Christian Church. While in
Louisville, we were also blessed to attend Worship Meetings held by
Flame Fellowship International, an anointed time of Music, Ministry,
Fellowship and Prayer.

On Thanksgiving Friday, we hosted our first official Children's
Chaplaincy event at our Charleston, SC Headquarters. Two young people
participated in making beaded Christmas ornaments and baking cookies.
Then we caught the city bus just outside of my Charleston neighborhood
for a little Christmas shopping. It was a joy for me to watch these
two young people shopping independently for the first time!

The first weekend in December included services in Branchville and
Summerville, SC, and my first outdoor Christmas Concert, ever! We
returned to Illinois, where the first Annual Fayette County All-Church
and Community Christmas Celebration united many of God's family
together under one roof to help restock the Fayette County Food
Pantry. Our thanks to the First Christian Church of Vandalia, for
hosting this wonderful event, and for their generous support of my
Children's Chaplaincy!

We returned to Charleston to celebrate Christmas with even more Music
and Ministry. I ended the year on a high note, by familiarizing one
of "my" kids with a specialized piece of technology for the blind.

In spite of our struggling economy and the increased cost of
transportation, God consistently calls "Music by Laurel Jean" to
minister throughout this great country! He continues to provide for
this ministry, through folks like you and the churches and
organizations you represent. Whether across the country or just down

Thanks to all who have been praying for Zack, before, during and
after his surgery. He is doing very well and is looking forward to
the next few days when his doctor says he can play ball again.

in prayer. We remember those who are dealing with illness (physical,
emotional, financial, spiritual), and ask God to render His healing
touch. We pray for peace in the lives of all who are grieving over
the loss of a loved one. We also pray for folks like Pastor Jones,
who are traveling throughout the country to spend this Holy Season
with family, or to serve in ministry.

Im writing from my Charleston, SC office, wrapping up the 2008 Christmas Season and looking forward to another exciting year of Music and Ministry.

Miss Audrey, Zack and I arrived at the Charleston office just before Thanksgiving. On the Friday after Thanksgiving, we hosted our first official outreach event for area blind youth. We made hand-beaded Christmas ornaments, baked cookies and muffins, ate pizza, played Uno with Braille cards and even caught the city bus to do some Christmas shopping at Citadel Mall! I especially enjoyed the shopping trip, as I watched my young guests shop independently.

Joan and our long-time friend, Mary, joined us in Charleston on December 2. I was blessed to be the main presenter for this years Cattle Creek Christmas Celebration, Friday December 5, in the historic outdoor tabernacle of Cattle Creek Campground near Branchville, SC. I will never forget this unique service, conducted entirely by lantern and candlelight. The warmth of the area folks who attended more than compensated for the chill of December in the Lowcountry.

Saturday, December 6, B, a delightful young violin student who isnt letting her blindness get in her way, came to my Charleston headquarters for a jam session. After jamming, we walked independently around the neighborhood using our white canes and later joined Joan, Mary, Audrey and Zack for a little Christmas shopping.

On December 7, Sonrise Christian Church in Charleston hosted The Message in Music by Laurel Jean. We invited children and teens from the congregation to accompany me with a variety of rhythm instruments as we all sang, Jesus Loves Me. A young boy came running up to the front of the church with a confident, Hi! Im Prince Mason, and this is Princess Abigail! These two little ones were followed by an enthusiastic group of teens. When I had finished performing with my impromptu band, I asked Audrey and Zack to share their testimony, and those teens listened intently to every word. Over half of them came forward for special prayers during Pastor Jerrys invitation.

That evening, I presented Christmas Concert Ministry during Evening Vespers at the Presbyterian Community of Summerville, SC. My contact person, Mrs. Rice, greeted me in her Jazzy, the motorized chair that keeps her on the move. Mrs. Rice, a retired music teacher, had generously donated her Steinway to the Community Chapel. As I greeted that dear lady and took her gnarled hand, I remembered my own music teacher, and I knew that I would not be unloading my digital piano as I usually do. Mrs. Rices piano was almost as beautiful as the spirit of its owner. I thank God for blessing me with a love for music that transcends generations.

On December 11, Joan, Mary, Audrey, Zack and I headed back to Illinois, arriving just in time for me to join Vandalia Radio personality Dan Michel on his show The Morning Caf, Friday, December 12. Music By Laurel Jean with a special, inspirational message from Joan were featured at this years CWF Christmas Brunch hosted by the First Christian Church of Vandalia, Saturday, December 13. During this program, the CWF (Christian Womens Fellowship) surprised me with special recognition and a generous gift for my newly founded Childrens Chaplaincy. Heartfelt thanks go out to the First Christian Church of Vandalia, for their belief in and support of this ministry.

Sunday, December 14 marked the first Annual Fayette County All-Church and Community Christmas Celebration. God truly used this event to promote unity and raise local awareness of the Fayette county Food Pantry. Folks representing churches throughout Fayette County gathered for an afternoon of music, Christian fellowship, and lots of delicious food! Gods kids of all ages joined in the fun, with another impromptu rhythm band. I was especially blessed as Steven, my brother in Christ, came forward to accompany us on the bongos.

Audrey, Zack and I flew back to Charleston late December 17. On December 20, Music By Laurel Jean was hosted and sponsored by Dixie Land Guide Dog Users at this years Christmas Party of the Charleston Chapter of the American Council of the Blind. Three of my kids came to be part of the festivities. I was honored to accompany B, in a guest appearance with her violin, and R, who came forward to help lead the audience in a Christmas sing-a-long. T, who aspires to be a meteorologist, even got to meet local TV 2 personality Rob Fowler.

That evening, I shared the Sounds of the Season with the folks at Low Country Freewill Baptist Church. Thanks to little Shane and Abbey, who came forward to sing a few carols with me and watched me as I read the bumps on the page from Scripture.

Thanks also to Nancy, Dorace, Marti, Bill, Mary, Joan, and everyone who allowed God to shine His Light, making possible this awesome Christmas Season, 2008.

Notes from the Journey

"Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish,
but how far will they go among so many?"

In less than two weeks, many of us in the MusicNotes family will be
gathering around tables, thanking God for His abundant blessings,
enjoying fellowship and sharing a delicious Thanksgiving meal.
Audrey, Zack and I will be in South Carolina this Thanksgiving,
spending time with area blind youth during their school breaks, as
part of our Children's Chaplaincy. Looking back over my life, I have
so much for which to be thankful!

As I think about gathering around the table with those dear to me, I
remember Joanne and Don, two lifelong friends of our family. My dad
left our family when I was very small, and I barely remember those
troublesome days when Mom struggled to make ends meet. Joanne and
Don, who worked for a local grocery store, were always salvaging the
dented cans and those without labels, which couldn't be placed on the
store shelves. My mom still speaks so fondly of the boxes of canned
goods brought to us by the generosity of this sweet, Christian couple.

I remember Joanne, whose family also used those canned goods, laughing
while she planned her dinner menu spontaneously as each unlabeled can
was opened. "You can always tell which cans are green beans," she
would say to my mom. "Because they squeak when you shake them."

When Joanne and Don gathered their children around the table,
everyone, from the oldest to the youngest, was allowed to say a
prayer. Even then baby Jennifer was encouraged as she cooed her
first, "Thank you, Jesus."

These childhood memories came to me recently, during a conversation
with Janet Wise, the director of our local Fayette County, IL Food
Pantry. She told me that, back in 1997; around 60 families (between 1
and 8 persons per family) came to the food pantry each month. Now, an
estimated 260 families visit the food pantry in a month's time.

On this note, I'm writing with an invitation to my MusicNotes family,
especially those living in Fayette County, IL.

On December 14, 2008, 2:00 PM Central Time, all of the people, all of
the churches, all of the communities in Fayette County are invited to
the First Christian Church of Vandalia (corner of 5th and Randolph).
There, we will joyfully unite to restock our county's food pantry in
the First Annual Fayette County All-Church and Community Christmas
Celebration! We're asking God's kids of all ages to come, and for all
who are able to bring at least one non-perishable food item.

Please mark your calendar, and keep this event in your prayers. I
also challenge other churches, other villages, and other towns in
other counties to unite in one place in a celebration on behalf of
folks in need.

"When they had all had enough to eat, he (Jesus) said to his
disciples, 'Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be
wasted.' So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the
pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten."
(John 6:12-13)

I believe that, with God working through us, our neighbors don't have
to be hungry. If each of us thinks outside the box, we can provide
both physical and spiritual nourishment, with plenty to spare!

More Notes of Prayer and Praise

Zack's bookshelf was bare. With only two copies of "Zack's
Tales" left in our inventory and his featured program just two weeks
away, it was way past time to reorder! Audrey called the printer and
placed the order. She was told to allow two weeks for reprinting, and
at least a week for processing/shipment. God placed it on my heart to
believe and to reassure Audrey that the books would arrive before the
end of October. Contrary to all of the worldly evidence indicating
otherwise, I chose to do just that (knowing that not I, but Christ,
does the work). Less than five days after the order was placed, a
delivery truck pulled into the driveway. Zack's books arrived with
plenty of time to spare!

In spite of our struggling economy and the increased cost of
transportation, God consistently calls us to minister throughout this
country. This extensive travel is possible because of the ongoing
support of folks like you and the churches and organizations you
represent!
Your prayers help make this ministry possible. Please also
continue to pray for our newly-founded Children's Chaplaincy.
Remember B, who is beginning to learn Braille music, T, learning
to use new technology that will help with schoolwork, S, who is
working very hard to master Braille math skills, and JT, still
fighting kidney disease.

As always, we lift you and the rest of our "MusicNotes" family up
in prayer. A longtime reader who is also blind, is trying to recover
personal items, lost in transit during a major move. A grandmother is
grateful that her grandchildren won't have to endure a bitter custody
battle. A south Carolina family is thankful because their
loved one has been given a reprieve from originally-diagnosed terminal
cancer now in full remission! One of our faithful volunteers (and a
MusicNotes reader) is facing back surgery, while the sister of another
is recovering from surgery. Still others ask for prayer in their
bouts with heart disease and cancer.

Our Lord reassures us in Matthew 18:20, "For where two or three
come together in my name, there am I with them."

Airing and Sharing

Were back in the office, catching up with administrative work following a busy and blessed few days.

This past Thursday and Friday, October 16 and 17, Audrey, Zack, Joan and I participated in Share, 2008, the annual fundraiser of Christian Radio FM 88.3, WJLY, Ramsey, IL. We had a great time, sharing music and testimony on the air with folks from Moody Radio as well as the local WJLY family. Read the blog of local personality Pastor Harold Bumper Quick.

On Sunday, October 19, we were off to Glasford, IL with Concert Ministry for a special fall gathering of the Kingston Mines and White Chapel United Methodist Churches. It was a joy to work with Pastor Jim Reed and his congregations again! Following a Spirit-filled evening service, we all headed downstairs for food and fellowship. Ive never seen so many cookies before in my life! J During our fellowship time, I was blessed to visit with Jacob and Emily, two brilliant kids, each with an interest in music and lots of questions for me! They enjoyed looking at the printed representation of Braille music that is part of my display, and telling me all about their own music studies.

Bright and early Monday morning, we were in Lincoln, IL in the studio of Christian Radio AM 1370 WLLM, where I joined station manager Bill Dolan as a guest co-host on the Live Record Request Program. What a wonderful time of music, ministry and fellowship (including lots of laughs)!

With each new musical and speaking engagement, I meet more of Gods family. I am especially touched by the work of Christian Radio. Because of this unique medium, even those folks who cant leave their homes are united with the One Body of Christ, the Church, in Christian fellowship. My thanks to all who pray for and support their local/area Christian radio stations!

1 Corinthians 12:27: Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.

Notes of Prayer
================================================== ====================

One of the greatest joys of being part of any family is the gift
of joining together in prayer. Thanks for your ongoing prayers for
this ministry, especially my newly found Children's Chaplaincy. We
praise God for the recent accomplishments of kids like B, a violin
student who made regional orchestra in her state. We pray for T and
S, who strive to learn Braille math skills, and for JT, another one of
"my" kids, as he valiantly struggles with kidney failure. Please also
continue to pray for us as we reach out to our young brothers and
sisters in the blindness community, their teachers, families and
friends.

While Audrey, Zack and I were in Charleston, SC, prayer was being
answered in our Ramsey, IL office. Audrey is doing great with her
Braille skills, but still reads large print. We had been praying for
a video magnifier, which enlarges print and displays it on a screen.
She has one, but with the new office in South Carolina, we actually
need two.
Joan had been watching EBay, thrift stores and garage sales over
the past few months, while we prayed for a used video magnifier
(knowing that we would be lucky to find one for one hundred dollars).
It was at a local church rummage sale that Joan spotted a video
magnifier for five dollars! She called us right away, to let us know
that it worked perfectly! No one at the rummage sale knew who might
have donated this valuable item. Thanks be to God!

We always lift you and the rest of the "MusicNotes" family up in
prayer. Josh, our brother in Christ, has recently moved across the
country to study computer programming. A reader asks for prayer for
her sister who is recovering from back surgery, and others for friends
and loved ones battling cancer.

More Adventures in Music and Ministry!

Were in tune for fall, getting ready for another weekend of music and ministry here in Central IL. The past couple of months have been very busy, with church events in Illinois, Missouri and as recently as last week, Charleston, SC.

Late September 30, I flew into Charleston, where I joined Audrey and Zack for a week of ministry. As part of our Childrens Chaplaincy, two families, each with a blind teenager, came to my Charleston Headquarters. It was a joy to meet with both of these youths. We discussed their futures, shared music and fellowship, looked at Braille cookbooks and talked a lot about doing math in Braille!

On Sunday, October 5, we were welcomed into another of Gods Family Rooms as I brought The Message In Music during Morning Worship to the Lowcountry Freewill Baptist Church in Charleston. My thanks to Pastor Jones and all who made us feel so welcome!

On Monday, the 6^th, we visited the Charleston School for the Arts. There, we caught up with a high school sophomore who is not letting her blindness get in the way of her goals. This violin student is excited about the possibility of learning Braille music, and obtaining the computer technology that she will need to continue in her music studies.

On Tuesday, the 7^th, Audrey, Zack and I accompanied Jackie, a therapy/service dog (and Bill, one of her handlers), to Charleston Southern University. The Writing 106 class was learning about process, discussing how something works or how to do something. We talked about service dogs, white canes, sighted guides, Braille and the fact that God uses all of us in spite of (and including) our disabilities. We also had the privilege of meeting the Dean of Special Education, who has invited us back each semester to speak with her students learning to be special needs teachers.

Audrey, Zack and I returned to Illinois on Wednesday, the 8^th. With every trip to Charleston, this city feels more like a home away from home to me. I affectionately call these brilliant young people my kids, and I feel as if their families are part of my own. Thanks Bill, Marti, Laura and Dorace for all of your help, especially the much-needed transportation!

By Sunday, the 12^th, we were recuperated and off to Granite City IL with music and ministry for the Second Sunday at Six, hosted by St. Johns United Church of Christ. Pastor Frost had learned beforehand that the 12^th was my birthday and unbeknownst to me, had passed a nice card around for the congregation to sign during my concert. Before closing the service, she led everyone in a chorus of Happy Birthday To You.

The 13^th was another extra-special day spent with more of my family in Christ. Joan, Audrey, Zack and I were joined by friends, Joyce and Anna Marie on a trip to Tuscola. After lunch with Jeri and Dale, longtime members of my MusicNotes Family, we stopped by the local nursing care facility for a visit with Rev and his wife, Maxie, also close friends of my ministry. The Lord put it on my heart to offer an impromptu concert at the piano for the folks there, and soon everyone was clapping their hands as they danced and sang along! Even those using walkers and wheelchairs had a unique dance to offer!

I am reminded of a church service where I knelt after receiving Holy Communion. People passed by on their way to the altar, singing along with the Communion Hymn. I could hear each unique voice as it joined in unison with my own. What a blessing it is to be part of Gods family, joining in the dance of life and service in His Name.

Ephesians 5:19-20 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

On September 14, "Music By Laurel Jean" celebrated another
wonderful Church Homecoming Day, this time with the congregation of
Watson Baptist Church. Once again, it was great to be joined by God's
kids of all ages in a medley beginning with "Jesus Loves Me This I
Know", and ending with "Lord I Lift Your Name On High". Each of the
kids who participated in my impromptu choir (and some who were just a
little too shy to come forward), received a Braille ABC card,
accompanied by a "Truth Coin" with some printed notes from God's word

On Tuesday, September 30, I will be flying to Charleston, SC for a
busy week in the "Lowcountry" area. In addition to reaching out to
area blind students through our children's chaplaincy, I will be
bringing God's Message in Music during Sunday Morning Worship at the
Lowcountry Freewill Baptist Church in Charleston, Sunday, October 5.

Your prayers for traveling mercies, and for all who help keep
this ministry going, mean more than words can say. My heartfelt
thanks to Joan who will be minding the office here in Illinois, as
well as Audrey, Zack and other generous volunteers who are currently
taking care of things in our new, Southeastern Headquarters.

Notes From the Calendar

Winding down the summer season and getting in tune for fall, we
have fond memories of bringing Concert Ministry to the folks at Long
Prairie Missionary Baptist Church. As we were setting up and doing a
sound check, Joan and I found the church's collection of rhythm
instruments (maracas, bells, triangles, tambourines, etc.) on a front
pew. We decided to put the children of the congregation to work and
gave them a spontaneous part in the program. Under Joan's direction,
each child received one of the instruments. All joined me, making a
joyful noise to the Lord, to the tunes of "Jesus Loves Me This I Know"
and "Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Praise The King!" Miss Audrey had the
rest of the congregation clapping along with us, while Zack (not to be
outdone) snored through the entire performance!

Our God is full of surprises! We only need to be open to His
working in and through us!

Over the next week, we look forward to sharing Music and Ministry
with God's kids of all ages. Three engagements, in Watson, IL, Clay
City, IL and Kirkwood, MO, are each open to the public! You'll find

Notes of Prayer
================================================== ====================

It is said, "The family that prays together stays together".
Thanks for remembering *all* of the "MusicNotes" family in *your*
prayers! Here are just a few things to pray about.

A mother and a grandmother ask that we continue to hold in prayer
all who are in the paths of recent and current storms. A pastor asks
for ongoing prayer for his daughter, who is undergoing multiple
reconstructive eye surgeries following a terrible automobile accident.
Another pastor and his wife ask for prayer for the new church that
they have just started, and for the community that we know is already
being blessed by their outreach.
I would ask that you pray for safe travels for Audrey and Zack,
as they make a return trip to Charleston next Tuesday, September 16,
for ministry and service in their home community. Also, remember
those children and their teachers, both blind and sighted, who have
returned to another school year.

Our personal thanks to anyone who takes the time to share prayer
